(Fiscal & Economic, Inflationary Measures)

  3. I am very surprised that you chose to criticize President Bush on his comments.

First of all, any one who understands basic concept of economy will agree that prices of commodities are driven up or down by demand and supply. What Mr. Bush merely said was a reflection of this concept. His reference was to the wealth generation in the developing countries causing broadening of middle-class population which in turn increases demand for superior food grains. In fact, Mr. Bush said it in a positive context and added that the wealth generation will help United States as it would improve exportability of goods from the US.

Second of all, what Mr. Bush said was not from his own text book. He merely repeated what the Indian Finance Minister had said just a few weeks ago about how 100s of millions of Indians have moved up the financial ladder and they are eating two meals a day now instead of one meal a day, which is causing increase in demand and increase in food prices.

Communists and leftists, as always, made good use of Mr. Bush’s comments to raise their voice against America. Our Indian media used Mr. Bush’s comments to sensationalize it as they always tend to do.

I do not find any thing wrong in what Mr. Bush and Mr. Chidambaram said about the increased demand for food grains. Objective analysis would help everyone, sensationalization will not.

  4. Just wanted to share an article from Newindpress:

Demand for better food behind demand-supply mismatch: Assocham
    Monday May 19 2008 00:00 IST
    PTI

MUMBAI: Indian industry body Assocham on Sunday echoed the US assessment of spiralling global food prices - that it is being caused partly by demand for better food in the subcontinent nation.

"Of late with rate of employment on the rise and income levels rising, a certain section of poor people, who were earlier consuming jowar (sorghum) have started consuming wheat which has resulted in more demand for wheat," Assocham President Venugopal Dhoot said here.

A similar statement by US President George Bush in early May that rising prosperity in India was "good" but it triggers demand for "better nutrition" that in turn leads to higher food prices had set off a controversy, prompting stinging reactions from Indian politicians.

Assocham, which today released a study on inflation, also said that the most critical demand side factor was population growth.

"While the population has grown 1.9 per cent annually, food grains production has failed to match it. The per capita availability of cereals and pulses have declined between 1990 and 2007," the industry body added.

Dhoot said: "Internationally, the real prices have reached the highest since the mid 1970s," while asking the government to let the Rupee appreciate, which will discourage exports and increase domestic availability of essential edibles.

The Rupee has, however, fallen over six per cent against the US dollar this fiscal, as demand for the greenback has grown in view of the upward spiral in oil prices.

  5. Thanks Lakshmi Narasimman,For your comment & views.
I would like to differ in three issues.
1.Though my comment on Bush is on lighter vein,I meant what I said in real terms. The basic reason for the shortage of food grains across the globe are out off three reasons viz. i.More people try to access

    quality food.
    ii.Failure of monsoon & productivity
iii.Man made errors out of wrong policies.

In these what Bush commented about India & Chian are in the context of first point. It is indeed true that worlds major populated countries are trying to access good food;but it is not their sin.
What America and it's people had been doing for the past 6 to 7 decades is,accessing the best of things in the world for american population,be it food or cloths or other utility items.
Now since there are people from other part of the globe, who are also competing for it makes America & Bush pointing out. His comment is not in positive spirit,as for as I can read it.

Secondly the drought-effect,this curtails supply mainly in some huge suppliers of food grains to the world. And,needless to say, America is not one of these countries.

Thirdly, man made policies which are also a cause for these shortage. On this count America if wholly responsible for issues arising out of need for bio-fuel are related subsidies it thrown for corn,on failing which those lands might have been cultivating rice or wheat.

Hence in all counts,my comment on Mr.Bush is not on just sensation, but on valid grounds.
